Using Continuous Emission Monitoring Data for Air Quality Modeling Inventories

چکیده

The Continuous Emission Monitoring (CEM) data have attracted interest for potentially providing improved point-source emissions data for air quality models. Through the CEM program, NOx and SO2 data have been collected on an hourly basis since 1995, but several features of the data must be addressed before they can be useful for air quality modeling. These features include the large volume of data, the lack of stack parameters or coordinates, and the lack of common identifiers between the CEM data and emissions inventories used for modeling. This paper describes how some of these problems can be addressed and how the CEM data can be used to benefit emissions for air quality modeling. Several analyses are presented that compare the 1995 CEM data to the 1995 Ozone Transport Assessment Group (OTAG) inventory. Both the emissions magnitude and the temporal variation are compared. The CEM data are also used to evaluate seasonal versus monthly temporal profiles. These analyses are considered with respect to their possible impact on air quality modeling.

Preparation of emission data for modeling with CMAQ from Spanish emission inventories and emission projections

The Technical University of Madrid (UPM) is currently studying the different alternatives to reduce air pollution in Spain. The policy design and decision-making for improving Air Quality are based on emission projections up to 2020 under several scenarios. The following step is to evaluate the impact of these scenarios using an Air Quality Model. The US EPA CMAQ modeling system has been select...

On the Use of Air Quality Monitoring Networks for the Evaluation of Nitrogen Oxide Emission Inventories

The usefulness of ground based air quality monitoring data for diagnostics of uncertainties in gridded emission inventories is examined. A general probabilistic procedure for comparison of levels of uncertainties in different emission datasets is developed. It implies the evaluation of the agreement between modeling results obtained with these emission datasets and corresponding measurements. T...

Emissions Inventory Development and Processing for the Seasonal Model for Regional Air Quality

The Seasonal Model for Regional Air Quality (SMRAQ) project is an effort to model ozone formation and transport from May to September of 1995 for the eastern two-thirds of the continental United States using a 36-km grid resolution. The emissions inventory was derived from the 1990 and 1995 Ozone Transport Assessment Group (OTAG) inventories. This paper describes the experiences and insight gai...

Advantages of a city-scale emission inventory for urban air quality research and policy: the case of Nanjing, a typical industrial city in the Yangtze River Delta, China

With most eastern Chinese cities facing major air quality challenges, there is a strong need for city-scale emission inventories for use in both chemical transport modeling and the development of pollution control policies. In this paper, a high-resolution emission inventory (with a horizontal resolution of 3× 3 km) of air pollutants and CO2 for Nanjing, a typical large city in the Yangtze Rive...

Analysis of Contributions to NO2 Ambient Air Quality Levels in Madrid City (Spain) through Modeling. Implications for the Development of Policies and Air Quality Monitoring

As environmental standards become more stringent (e.g. European Directive 2008/50/EC), more reliable and sophisticated modeling tools are needed to simulate measures and plans that may effectively tackle air quality exceedances, common in large cities across Europe, particularly for NO2. Modeling air quality in urban areas is rather complex since observed concentration values are a consequence ...
